Association of GLP-1 receptor agonist and SGLT2 inhibitor use with outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes undergoing pacemaker implantation

Avidan Y, Jonas M, Hadar D, et al. (2026). Current Problems in Cardiology.

Summary

An observational study of electronic health records for 3,609 people with type 2 diabetes who had a pacemaker fitted between 2016 and 2023. The investigators are based at Lady Davis Carmel Medical Center in Haifa, Israel. People dispensed a GLP-1 receptor agonist (193), an SGLT2 inhibitor (438) or both (231) were compared with 2,747 who received neither. Over three years, each treated group had lower all-cause mortality than the neither group, and the combination was associated with the lowest (hazard ratio 0.41). The combination was also associated with fewer heart-failure hospitalisations. The authors describe an association, not cause and effect, and say randomised trials are needed. No competing interests were declared.
