Semaglutide, independent of weight loss, attenuates cardiac and hepatic remodelling in experimental heart failure with preserved ejection fraction

Elbatreek MH, et al. (2026). European Heart Journal.

Summary

A preclinical study in two animal models of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, ZSF1 obese rats and Göttingen minipigs. Semaglutide improved diastolic function and reduced cardiac and liver fibrosis, in a way the authors say was independent of weight loss and linked to lower pro-fibrotic and hypertrophic signalling. This is an animal study; it does not test people. The authors note that clinical translation, and GLP-1 receptor engagement in heart tissue, need further study. Funding was from several institutional sources.
