Target Trial of Semaglutide Versus Dulaglutide or Liraglutide in Patients Receiving Hemodialysis
Le D, Forman E, Kraft WK, et al. (2026). Diabetes Care.
Summary
An observational study using US Renal Data System and Medicare records from 2011 to 2022, set up to resemble a trial. It compared semaglutide with dulaglutide or liraglutide in people with diabetes on maintenance haemodialysis. There were 1,312 semaglutide users and 2,601 dulaglutide or liraglutide users; after weighting, the effective sample was 3,200. Semaglutide was associated with a lower chance of dying while on dialysis at one year (11% versus 13%) and with more weight loss at one year (about 4.8% versus 3.4%). One-year hospitalisation was also lower (57% versus 62%). These figures come from routine-care records and show an association, not a randomised comparison. The authors conclude that semaglutide may be preferred to dulaglutide in this group.
