Thymosin alpha 1 improves the outcomes of patients with hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure by restoring immune balance

Li ZH, Wu LL, Zhu YQ, et al. (2026). Immunopharmacology and Immunotoxicology.

Summary

An open-label randomised trial in 73 patients with hepatitis B-related acute-on-chronic liver failure, comparing standard medical therapy with standard therapy plus thymosin alpha 1. Thymosin alpha 1 was associated with higher 90-day transplant-free survival, fewer regulatory T cells at weeks 4 to 8 and a moderated late inflammatory response. The trial was open-label and the analysis focused on immune markers. Funding was not stated in the abstract.
