Potential bone marrow-driven reduction of circulating inflammatory monocytes by semaglutide in Type 2 diabetes
Teunis et al. (2026). European Heart Journal.
Summary
A small before-and-after study in 16 people with type 2 diabetes treated with semaglutide for six months. HbA1c fell by 21.1 mmol/mol, weight by 6.7 kg and hsCRP by 1.0 mg/L. Circulating CD16-positive monocytes, an inflammatory immune cell type, fell by 18.8%, and bone marrow retention of these cells rose in line with weight loss. Several inflammatory markers decreased, and bone marrow uptake on a DOTATATE PET scan fell by 17.5%, with no change in coronary or spleen uptake. There was no control group. Funded by Dutch and European public grants; no industry funding disclosed.
