Bone anabolic agents repair alveolar bone damaged by diabetes in mice

Turkkahraman H, Walton CJ, Koizumi Y, et al. (2026). International Journal of Oral Science.

Summary

A mouse study of the FDA-approved peptides parathyroid hormone (PTH 1-34, teriparatide) and abaloparatide in alveolar bone, the jaw bone that holds the teeth. In mice with established type 2 diabetes, both peptides increased bone formation without a further rise in the already high resorption, and the authors report a net gain in alveolar bone. In non-diabetic mice the same peptides raised both formation and resorption, with no net change in alveolar bone mass. The bone-building effect required the PTH1 receptor (PTH1R) on osteocytes. This is an animal study in mice.
