Elamipretide rejuvenates oocyte quality and restores female fertility during reproductive aging

Zhang HL, Wang Y, Wang C, et al. (2026). Aging Cell.

Summary

A study of elamipretide in reproductive ageing. In aged mice it was associated with larger litters and better oocyte quality, with improved nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation linked to a vitamin B6-VEGF pathway. It also improved maturation, fertilisation and cleavage of aged human oocytes in the laboratory and rescued porcine oocytes under oxidative damage. The human work was on oocytes in vitro, not on women.
